As I get organized for my son’s Star Wars themed birthday party, I realize how much I enjoy creating such a special event to celebrate another year of his life and to see that adorable smile on his face when he understands all the effort that was put into his special day. Spending quality time with my boys is always a highlight but cooking together in the kitchen is one of my favorite things to do. Honestly, it is the little things that enhance my kitchen experience like hearing their little giggles, sneaking a quick kiss, getting nervous that an eggshell is going to land in the batter when they crack it, listening to them negotiate on which spatula and bowl they are going to lick first and watching their eyes light up when they see a recipe come together. Rather than my focus be on highlighting a local business today, this blog is about the true value of simply spending time together with the ones you love. You don’t have to do anything extravagant or break the bank to create a memory, you just need to find something to connect with. It is easy for me to connect with the boys through food and even easier if the food is Star Wars themed!
I found these really cool food molds in the shape of Han Solo frozen in the carbonite wall from the movie The Empire Strikes Back. I was instantly excited to create something with these molds and determined to test my skills and play chocolatier for a day. I’ve never made chocolate candies before and have always wanted to try it. The birthday boy LOVES Nutella so I decided to create a Nutella Stuffed Star Wars Chocolate Candy, click on recipe title to link to the recipe.
When I told the boys what we were creating, they screamed “Yeah!”, clapped their hands and jumped up and down. Needless to say, they were very excited. I bought some tools and silver sugar dust to paint the chocolates to look just like the wall in the movie.
Once I had all my supplies and tools, I was ready to give it a go. I first filled my piping back with Nutella. Then I tempered the chocolate over a double boiler until completely melted and it reached a smooth consistency.
While tempering the chocolate, we brushed the chocolate mold with the silver candy dust. Once chocolate was melted we poured it into the molds and shook off the excess chocolate. Scrape the tops of the molds and edges to remove any leftover chocolate. Place in fridge to harden for 10 minutes.
Next fill the molds with a little bit of Nutella. Don’t forget to leave room for more chocolate on top and the sides to seal the candy. Look at my son’s intense look as he squeezes the Nutella into the mold! He is serious about this candy making.
Stick it back in the fridge for another 10 minutes to harden.
Finally, Add more of the tempered chocolate on top and make sure to fill each mold all the way to the top. Scrape off all the excess chocolate and place back in the fridge for the last 10 minutes.
None of us could hardly wait for the chocolate to be set and ready. The boys were rushing me to take pictures for the blog so they could dig in and try them. The creamy Nutella center was rich and delicious. Whoever invented the combination of chocolate and hazelnut is a genius. We all decided that we enjoyed the candy so much that we were going to make a few batches and keep them for ourselves. Even if you aren’t a Star Wars fan, watching the expressions on both my kid’s faces when the chocolate came out of the molds, made this candy making experience so worth it. Typically when the boys ask me what my secret ingredient is with whatever we are eating, I usually sarcastically reply with “love”. Today, that couldn’t be more true.
Eat. Love. Together.

Love the creativity. Poor Han Solo frozen in Nutella. But I would rather be frozen in this than in liquid carbonite.

Those look pretty amazing. I was going to ask where I could find the silver dust and the molds, but as usual amazon is the answer to most things.
